MY PROCESS

As a marine artist experience has taught me that historical maritime paintings require a special approach. My personal objective is to create in visual terms a narrative which is convincing, interesting and dramatic.

Accurate details of ships are sourced from national maritime collections in the form of models and draughts or the Public Records Office for ships logs, although reports of events may vary in accuracy, eye witness accounts are revealing, often telling a story at variance with the official narrative.

Marine artists in the present day are fortunate in having much more information archived and accessible. My task as an artist is to incorporate and interpret this information into a credible image that tells a story.

MY METHOD

I create a plan of the sequence of events as recorded in ships logs, special attention being given to sea and wind conditions and courses steered. Having familiarised myself with the details, I determine a viewpoint which best tells the emerging story. I then make a series of sketches using simple models as visual aids and produce a highly detailed drawing of the final composition, which is scaled up and transferred to canvas previously prepared with a wash of thinned oil paint, predominantly the warm tone of Burnt Sienna sometimes modified with Indigo.

I consider it important to my method that I transfer the image in oil paint from the beginning in both line and tone, blocking in basic forms to establish the tonal range in monochrome, progressively adding as much detail as will allow the painting to maintain its own dynamism as it progresses.

Geoffrey Huband - Artist At Work

I find it a source of stimulation and excitement to leave myself open to “Happy Accidents” which may occur, sustaining bravura and spontaneity. This may be a risky approach but the potential of the surprise element makes it rewarding and certainly focuses the mind. I always have conversations with my paintings as they progress and the feedback I receive tells me when the work is complete.
